Why it is significant

One thing that makes the Galapagos very important was that it was one of the key things to discover evolution. Galapagos is so unique that there had to be something amazing. It was the very first thing to trigger the idea of evolution for Charles Darwin (see that section). In 1998  there was a trip to the Galapagos to film a Imax. It is worth seeing.

Anyways, they had scuba equipment, and in total they made thirty dives, and went down 3000 feet and even found new species of fish. The percents for endemic (found nowhere else) species are this: fish 15% and reptiles 83%. That’s a huge number. We need to protect it. Some species of tortoises have already gone extinct, because they can live for up to a year with no food or water, and that made them prey to ships to have fresh meat that they do not have to feed or water them. Also with competition with feral #Galapagoats ( see Odds and Ends). Can you guess whose fault that is? So far all the extinction on Galapagos has been caused by us, rather unsurprisingly. It is also because we keep introducing goats weeds cats dogs rats pigs (invasive plants and animals, and I did not forget punctuation, I didn’t add commas to emphasis it). People are looking for more extinct species, and there was a close call with a Barnacle Blenny. It was not seen for a little and people thought it was extinct from El Nino (see Climate). Thankfully it was spotted in 2000. But still the search continues.  I find the Galapagos important because of the proof it holds. It is also home to many endangered species. And with the endemic species, if something happens to them there, then they are extinct. The Galapagos  might holds tons of solutions to world problems, we just don’t know! It is such a unique paradise that functions really well without interference. It has extreme diversity that we learn from, and amazing things can grow without competition - for example the dandelion trees (see Plants). Also science learns new things from it anytime it tries to. And overall it is such a amazing thing to have occurred.
